Early indications are that the 2020-21 NHL season is slated to begin on January 1. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has just released their updated Stanley Cup odds for next year, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights have opened as the +600 favorites, followed by Tampa Bay (+700) and Colorado (+800). The league has already announced the postponement of next year’s Winter Classic and All-Star Game. It is still unknown if the league will be able to complete a normal 82-game schedule in the allotted time. Reports have said that the NHL needs to wrap their season by the start of the 2021 Olympic games, which are currently scheduled to begin on July 23.

So far, so good. The NHL announces that of the 4,256 Covid-19 tests administered to players from July 18th-25th, there were zero positive tests. The NHL will resume its season this weekend from the hub cities of Toronto and Edmonton. Teams 5 through 12 in each conference will participate in a play-in round, while the top-four teams in each league will have a separate round-robin contest to determine their seeding in the first round. In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers would receive the free pass through the opening round. In the Western Conference, the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Las Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars would receive the byes.
