They will not be the top-10 teams in terms of league standings, but what we believe are the teams that are deserving of the top spots in the NHL. Buster’s Top-10 NHL Teams (Nov. 18 – Nov. 24)

The forgotten club is forgotten no more and they sit in our Number 1 spot for the first time this year. They had another good week going 2-2 by beating the Bruins to take the Top spot on our list. It looks like our concern with goaltending on the Capitals is starting to get better and if that continues this club is dangerous. This is what we said about the Capitals goaltending last week and they really had a good week except for a bad start against Montreal. The Capitals have lost only twice in regulation in a month and they deserve to be our Number 1 as Boston continues to stumble. They have a nice easy week this week and even a little stumble keeps them at number 1 next week.

The Bruins have finally lost the top spot on our list as they went 1-2 on the week and now have lost 5 out of 6 games. Not sure what has happened as they still are playing some good hockey but they have been running into some hot goaltending of late. Their last 3 losses all have came in the shootout so a little more luck and they would have a few more wins. They have 3 games against some defensive minded teams that have not really scored much this season, so we expect 2 if not 3 wins by the Bruins as they work their way out of their slump.

The NYI will hold pat at number 3 this week, as they are one of the few teams in our Top 10 that actually had a winning week. They beat both Toronto and Philadelphia this week and we really like what we keep seeing from this club. Not sure if they will be able to crack the top two teams anytime soon but we are very impressed by the hockey this club is playing. We said this last week and now we think they will break the top two, maybe even by next week, especially if Boston continues to falter. The Islanders have now won 13 out of 14 games and they have 3 games this week. If they lose all 3 games next week they will be given a pass and will be in our Top 3 no matter what. They deserve it.

The Avalanche stay at Number 4 again this week as we stay very impressed in how they have bounced back since losing Miko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog. Colorado went 2-1 this week and they still have 2 games remaining on their 5 game road trip. We believe they have already had a successful trip considering the injuries but one more would put them over .500 for the trip. They will play their last game on the dreaded Western Canada road trip in Calgary on Tuesday and then go to Minnesota for the final game. They will have two days rest waiting for the Flames to get back from Vegas and that could be a big help in winning one of those last two road trip games. If they can beat the hated Leafs at home on Saturday, which will be a really tough spot for Colorado, they will keep the number 4 spot next week. Depending on how the top teams play they may keep it anyways.

We said last week that the Lightning must win both games they play or they will lose the number 5 spot this week and drop at least a spot. Well when the whole Top 10 basically play terrible, the team that went 1-1 and looked great doing it holds their spot. The Lightning dominated the Rangers at home and looked like maybe they turned the corner but they ran into a hot goaltender on Saturday and lost. They have 3 games this week and we would like to see them win 2 out of 3 to keep their 5th place spot. They have won 4 out of their last 6 games and we will be keeping our eye on the team who we believed was the best NHL club at the start of this season.

They keep their spot next week even if they slide a little. This is what we said about the Blues last week. Well not did they slide they lost all 3 games. The regression was inevitable playing without Vladimir Tarasenko but they also had to deal with the loss of Alexander Steen this week, as he will miss a month with a high ankle sprain. In their 3 losses, two were in OT, so with a little luck they could have been just as easily wins. They will stay in Number 6 for this week as everyone struggled on the list. They have 3 really tough games this week but all at home. They lose all 3 they will be off the list. A win keeps them hanging on the list but just barely.

The Oilers had a 1-2 week but they jump a spot up to 7th on our list. Even though they went 1-2 they have looked much better offensively. They do still lead the Pacific and therefore they will hold a spot for at least one more week. As we said last week, they have started opening it up and that offense will get them far moving forward. They still are a wait and see club for us because deep down we really do not trust them. The Oilers start a 5 game road trip with 3 games this week. Last week we said, they needed to win 2 out of 3 to stay on our list. Well they went 1-2 but because everyone else was so terrible for the most part in our Top 10 they get to stay, and even move up. This road trip will decide how long they stay on our list.

We welcome the Arizona Coyotes this week as they have been on the outside looking in. They went 3-1 on the week winning in some impressive spots. They beat our Number 1 team in OT this week and won in another tough road spot in St. Louis. This team has been playing some great hockey for HC Tocchet and he has the team playing the type of hockey he was known for. That is tough, scrappy and defensive. They get the Kings twice this week and the hated Leafs. They can lose to LA both times but if they beat the Leafs, they stay on our list.

When we started our list this year, there was no way did we ever think that our favorite team would be on it. Well here they are sitting in 9th spot as they have surprised everyone with their great start, including us. They have now won 7 out of their last 10 games and by beating our Number 1 team they gained entry on to our list. The best goaltender in the NHL Carey Price (we are a little biased) has been winning games like the good old days for Montreal. The Habs come off a solid 2-1 week with their only loss in OT to New Jersey. They have 3 games this week and we would really love to see them stay on our list but we will have to just see exactly what we have in Montreal. As you hear me say all the time, it is still early.

The Predators are dropping like a stone and almost fell out of our list this week. Nashville went 0-2 with their games this week and another losing week drops them from our list. This team was actually a deserving 3rd on our list just 2 weeks ago, but the wheels have fallen off of late. They have now lost 6 out of 7 games and have been taking a beatdown in a couple of them. This team has too much talent to play the way they have been playing. We said this last week and now we are wondering if they are becoming another Toronto Maple Leafs. They have 3 games this week and need to win 2 out of 3 to stay on our list.
