The early part of the season in the NFL is usually all about working off the offseason rust and getting back into a groove. Some teams are better at it than others, but as we have seen over the years in this league, the cream has a way of rising to the top. A slow start to the season is certainly not ideal, but with an 82-game season to be played, it is also definitely not the end of the world. Every team in the league is going to experience a great winning streak and a horrible losing streak, so for those starting out slow, it’s all just a matter of being patient and sticking to the game plan. The perfect example of that can be seen by just looking at last season when the St. Louis Blues went from being in the bottom of the Western Conference to Stanley Cup Champions in just a few short months. The Blues are off to a decent start to this season and will look to keep it rolling when they host the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night. The Blues are favored by 1 ½, with the goal total for this one set at 5 ½.

Why bet on the Minnesota Wild
With just 8 points from 12 games, the Minnesota Wild find themselves down in the cellar of the Central Division in the Western Conference. While that is certainly not the start they would have hoped for, they have done a decent job of righting the ship after losing 6 of their opening 7 games. They have now won 3 of their last 5 games, but consistent scoring is still proving to be an issue, with the Wild managing just 29 goals through their opening 12 games. The fact that they have given up 43 goals during that run shows that they have some work to do to get out of the basement. The road has been a major issue for this team, with the Wild going 1-7-0 in their 8 games away from home.
Why bet on the St. Louis Blues
In the early going, the St. Louis Blues have found themselves engaged in a ton of close games, going 6-3-3 and picking up 15 points in the process. A little more luck in those OT losses and they could easily be sitting atop the standings in the Central Division. As it is, they are just 2 points off the pace being set by the Colorado Avalanche at the top. The one thing that the Blues need to start doing is to get their offense in gear, as they have 37 goals scored against 39 conceded, which makes their overall record more than a little surprising. Given that their power play is clicking at 25%, you do get the sense that the goals will start to come.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
The Minnesota Wild have been brutal on the road to start the season, but given the lack of goals that these two teams are generating, this one might well be close. I have the Blues winning this one, but taking the Wild to cover might be the way to go.
