Real Madrid encountered quite the resistance in their trip to Amsterdam a couple of weeks back. They did escape with a valuable win against Ajax and the match-up is now reversed. Real Madrid will host the Dutch side on Tuesday for the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. Ajax fought really hard in the first leg but were unlucky at the end.

Spread: Ajax +1
Total: 3.5 Goals
Real Madrid did not have an easy job at all in the first leg against Ajax, but did manage to win. Their opponents were really great in the first half of that match. But the two teams entered the half-time break tied at 0-0. Real Madrid took the lead at the hour mark, only to be equalized at the 75th. Ajax pushed for a winner but it was Asensio who scored the winning goal for Real Madrid at the 87th minute for the final 2-1. Real Madrid will be looking to qualify to the quarter-finals for the ninth consecutive season. Their record in this stage of the competition stands at W9 L6. They have also been great against Dutch sides in two-legged ties (W6 L3). At home they have a 10-2-1 record against Dutch sides.
On the other hand, Ajax will surely be feeling frustrated about the outcome of the first leg. They were much more active than Real Madrid in the first half. But they couldn’t take the lead, despite creating 11 scoring chances in the first half alone. They did good to pull even and even had more chances to score a winner before Real Madrid scored their own. Ajax will be looking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002/03. But they are without a win in their last seven Champions League knock-out fixtures (0-5-2). Ajax haven’t had much luck against Spanish opposition in recent years. They have won just two of their last 15 matches against La Liga sides (2-12-1). And they have lost five of their last six matches in Spanish soil.
This will be the 14th match between the two sides, with Real Madrid clearly having the upper hand (8-4-1). They have been tremendous in recent years, winning each of the last seven matches. Real Madrid have won each of the last three home matches against Ajax, scoring nine goals in the process and conceding just once.
Ajax know that they will have to score twice in order to have qualifying chances. Of course this is not easy to do. Real Madrid have been bad defensively this season and can easily concede at least once. They are also carrying the disappointment of two consecutive home losses to Barcelona. I think that there is little room for an upset here, with Ajax eventually risking a lot. Real Madrid are great in open spaces so they should be able to edge their opponents out on this one.
