Updated 2019 College Football Championship Odds: Orange Report

The school that hosted the talents of Jim Brown, Donovan McNabb, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, Marvin Harrison, Dwight Freeney, Keith Bullock, Qadry Ismail and John Mackey haven’t sniffed a pigskin national championship in well over 50 years. And while the current Syracuse Orange coaching staff and player personnel can be exciting to watch the team’s 300-to-1 odds to earn a Division I football title still offers little value to investors. Updated 2019 College Football Championship Odds: Orange Report.

The Orange last won a football national championship in 1959, nearly 70-years ago. And while it would be irresponsible to say it will likely be another 70-years before they win another it won’t be in the 2018-19 campaign.

With all due respect to Dino Babers until the Cuse can field defensive talent to match their offensive abilities they won’t finish in the top half of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Yes, the Orange defeated a Clemson Tigers team a season ago with a near perfect game-plan. If a Tigers opponent wanted to put offensive yards and points on the stat-sheet and have a chance to win against last year’s Clemson squad it could be done by wearing down their defensive line due to the units lack of depth.

Babers has transformed the Orange into an entertaining product. However, their two straight 4-8 seasons under Babers won’t be good enough for long. And until the coaching staff can recruit defensive talent and scheme a plan to keep the opposition from putting 40-plus points on the scoreboard on any give Saturday the staff is on the hot seat.

The most exciting part of the 2018-19 campaign for Syracuse faithful may well be the new-look that the Carrier Dome has and is still receiving. Irony doesn’t fall far from the Orange tree. The Carrier Dome, a stadium that is named after an air conditioning company, if finally getting.. (drum roll please)… air conditioning. And a large number of other amenities to make it positive experience for visiting fans regardless of whether the Cuse win or lose.

The Eric Dungey era lives on in 2018-19 but will not have the same big play receivers from last season. Both Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips have departed and there is still a hundred-and-one questions about the line that protects Dungy. Also what was a pedestrian defense a year ago will be without it ‘backer corps, primarily the linebacking stalwarts.

The talents that Dungey possesses isn’t enough alone to make the Orange a surprise ACC team in 2018-19. This season’s football crystal ball projects yet another 4-8 record in the upcoming campaign.
