Without the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners entering the Belmont Stakes field, most people expected a wide open race in New York this weekend. And now that the 2/1 favorite Classic Empire has been scratched before the race, now we’ve REALLY got a wide open race. At the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, Irish War Cry (3/1) has assumed the role of favorite for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
Who is Epicharis? That’s the buzz around Belmont this weekend. At a price of 7/2, the Japanese import is certainly generating a lot of attention. But is it deserved? Epicharis finished second in the UAE Derby in March behind Thunder Snow (the horse that pulled up immediately after the post in the Kentucky Derby). Can Tapwrit find some consistency on Saturday that’s been lacking during his 3-year-old season? The Todd Pletcher horse dominated the Tampa Bay Derby in March, but finished fifth in the Bluegrass Stakes and sixth in the Kentucky Derby. Tapwrit’s sire, Tapit, has produced two of the last three Belmont winners: Tonalist in 2014 and Creator in 2016. And in a slightly-humorous twist of fate, the one-eyed fan favorite Patch will once again start from the far-outside post position where he won’t be able to see a single horse to his inside. He started 20th out of 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby, and he’s 12th out of 12 horses on Saturday.
