The ACC offers up a key Opening Weekend conference bout as Virginia Tech tangles with Florida State Monday, Sept. 3 in Tallahassee. How are we leaning on this one with our free college football picks?

The Line

The early Week 1 college football betting odds opened the Seminoles at around -5.5 over the Hokies. Early betting action then bumped that spread to -6.5.

Virginia Tech returns 12 starters this year from a team that finished 9-4 last season (6-7 ATS). The Hokies started 7-1 last year but lost three of their last five, including a bowl to Oklahoma State. Seven starters are back on an offense that averaged 413 YPG last year, including QB Josh Jackson (20/9 TD/INT as a freshman last year) and three along the offensive line. And five starters return on a defense that held foes to 319 YPG last year, although they do have to replace three of last year’s top five tacklers.

Florida State, meanwhile, returns 12 starters from a team that went 7-6 last year (4-7-2 ATS). The ‘Noles opened 0-2 last season and lost their starting quarterback. and later sat at 3-6. But they won three in a row to finish the regular season, then whooped Southern Miss in a bowl. But along the way they lost Coach Fisher to Texas A&M, so FSU is now being run by Coach Taggart (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS at Oregon last year). Eight starters are back from an offense that averaged 352 YPG last year, including two quarterbacks with full seasons of starting experience, RB Cam Akers (1,024 yards as a freshman last year) and four along the offensive line. But only four starters are back on a defense that allowed 331 YPG last year, following the loss of six of last year’s top seven tacklers.

Florida State leads the all-time series with V-Tech 23-12, but these teams haven’t met since 2012, a 28-22 Seminoles victory.

Free NCAAF Pick

FSU is playing for a new head coach, with new coordinators and new systems, and that all involves a learning curve. The Hokies, on the other hand, are in their third season under Coach Fuente, which is often a good place to be. We’re taking the points here with V-Tech.
