Seattle Storm finished last season with a 15-19 record. And closed the campaign with the fifth best mark in the Western Conference, as well, the eighth slot in the postseason schedule. Hence securing the final playoff spot in the postseason schedule.  In the playoffs they got eliminated by today’s opponent Mercury in the first round with a 79-69 score. They had lost four of their last five games to close out last season. They were led in scoring by Breanna Stewart with 19.9 ppg. Stewart added a team high 8.7 rebounds per game. She was followed by Jewell Loyd with 17.7 ppg, 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists, while Crystal Langhorne added 12.4 ppg and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Phoenix Mercury have a 1-0 record this season, having won in the season opener at home against the Wings with an 86-78 score. Last season they had an 18-16 record overall.  And finished with the third spot in the Western Conference standings. The Mercury also earned the 5th overall mark across the entire WNBA. In the playoffs they eliminated Seattle Storm in the first round by a 79-69 margin.  Ultimately Phoenix was swept by the Los Angeles Sparks in the semifinals. They are led in scoring by Diana Taurasi with 26 ppg. While DeWanna Bonner follows with 17 ppg and a team high 12 rebounds per game. Brittney Griner adds 13 ppg and 7 rebounds per game.

Mercury led the Storm 3-1 wins last season and had won both games in Seattle by an average of 3.5 points. Team Phoenix had a 9-8 home record last season, while Seattle were 5-12 on the road. Seattle were better offensively, scoring 82.6 ppg to Phoenix’s 81.9, while Phoenix were better defensively, allowing 81.9 ppg to Seattle’s 82.6. Seattle had better percentages both in field goals, shooting with a third-best 47.3% to Phoenix’s 44% and in 3-pointers, shooting with a 36.3% to Phoenix’s 33.9%.

The Seattle squad also dished a third-best 20.2 assists per game to Phoenix’s 17.6, while Phoenix were better in rebounding (32.1 to 31) and both teams were very close in turnovers committed (14.3 and 14.1). Seattle even though they lost both home games, they force close games both times. Vegas odds give Storm a -2.5 spread and expect them to beat the odds for the home win.
