Costa Rica were the biggest surprise package in the 2014 World Cup, as they made a spectacular run in the tournament. Their squad hasn’t changed that much since then, with their best players coming to Russia as well. Costa Rica will now start their World Cup duties with a dangerous match against Serbia. Serbia are capable of the best and the worst, but they have a really nice squad. World Cup Costa Rica vs Serbia Spread and Prediction.
Date/Time: 6-17-18, 08:00 EDT
Spread: Serbia -0.5
Total: 2 Goals
Costa Rica were sensational in the 2014 World Cup, proving that pretty much everyone had underestimated them. They seemingly had no chances to advance from a group that also featured Italy, England and Uruguay. However, not only did they advance, but they topped the group without losing a single match. They went on to eliminate Greece in the round of 16, but eventually fell in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands. This time around they have brought most of the players who participated in that success. Keylor Navas, Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and Celso Borges ready to carry their team. Costa Rica easily qualified from their group, finishing 2nd behind Mexico.
Serbia did an excellent job in the qualifiers as they topped their respective group (6-1-3). They were up against Ireland, Wales, Austria, Georgia and Moldova. They have a great generation of players and have put together a really strong squad. Serbia have more than enough talent in the midfield and offense, with players like Matic, Milinkovic-Savic, Tadic and Ljajic. Moreover, their defense will be safeguarded by Basta, Kolarov and Ivanovic. However, they don’t have a very experienced coach, and that might cost them in the long run.
Costa Rica play really carefully in their matches, with 7 of their 10 matches in the qualifiers featuring Under 2.5 Goals. Serbia only had 4 matches with the same statistic in just as many matches. However, they play really defensively against similar teams.
Both teams will approach this match with a lot of caution, as a loss for either team here would cause problems. I expect a low-scoring match here.
World Cup Costa Rica vs Serbia Prediction: Under 2 Goals (-122)
